My first job of 2019, working as an Esher magician in Surrey at Sandown Race Course. Not just that, there I was in a corporate box, from which you could easily see the whole of the racecourse. This was my second day at a racecourse, having performed at Epsom some years ago.
The course opened in 1875 and was the first purpose-built course in the country. Designed for the leisure industry, it has become a feature of British horse racing.
Apparently, this patch of green grass in the town of Esher was the Queen Mother’s favourite. It has seen great horses fun, including Desert Orchid. Although it may be steeped in nostalgia, it is also one of the most modern facilities in the sport.
The Jockey Club featured on the pass shown above, own 15 courses throughout the UK and stage races and conferences.
I had worked for this client several times in the past at different locations, including The Grove in Hertfordshire. So here I was back with him and his friends, early in the new year. The races are staggered about 30 minutes apart and run through the day from around 12 noon to 3.30pm. So it was possible to perform close up magic during the gaps and a cabaret spot during the lunch break.
The party was 17 in number, for which the box has ample room. The guest of honour was an avid poker player which led to much discussion about gambling and con tricks for which I have a number of demonstrations.
Good comedy magic can really enhance a day like this. The guests were there to watch the races but there is much downtime in between, and it was clear the crowd had fun.
I did place one small bet on the 3.30. Unfortunately, it came in second, “I should have bet each way! I guess if I was a real Esher Magician…
Still, I went home with my fee and memories of a great day at the races.
